Harold Huston Higgins, 94, of Amherst, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012. He was born December 26, 1917, in Galax, VA. He was the son of the late Della Hampton Higgins and Pius Colonel Higgins. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Cox Higgins, his brother, Pius Colonel Higgins, Jr., and his sister Nean Nancy Higgins. He served for many years as an elder and sang in the choir of the Amherst Presbyterian Church. Harold was also active in the Amherst Rotary Club and was recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow award. In addition, he was a member of the Amherst Masonic Lodge. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1939 and taught vocational agriculture and shop at Amherst County High School for 44 years. Harold is survived by his daughter, Sue Wilson, of Waynesboro and his son, Charles Higgins and his wife, Peggy, of Amherst. He has three grandchildren: Randy and Wanda Higgins, of Evington; Lisa and Bernie Wilson, of Madison Heights and Cindy and Dave Cramer, of Scott Depot, WV. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Matthew and Sandy Wilson, Andrew Wilson, Zachary Higgins, Schyler Higgins, Aaron Cramer, and Allison Cramer.
