Harold E. “Butch” Hoagland Jr., 65, of rural Alexander, IL died Tuesday evening, December 23, 2014 at his home.

He was born March 6, 1949 in Springfield, IL, the son of Harold E. “Buck” Sr. and Verna Jean Way Hoagland. He married Diann Lynn Smith on September 10, 1977 in Virden, IL and she preceded him in death on August 18, 2010.

He is survived by four children, Dewaine E. Hoagland (wife, April) of Auburn, Daniel L. Hoagland (wife, Julie) of LaGrange, KY, Mary D. Krispinsky (husband, Dr. Luke) of Nashville, TN, and Tommy E. Hoagland (wife, Lori) of Jacksonville; nine grandchildren, Sabrina S. Hoagland, Emma Diann Hoagland, Samantha Diann Hoagland, Noah Michael Sagrecy, Wyatt D. Hoagland, Amelia Grace Krispinsky, Olivia Diann Krispinsky, Levi Thomas Hoagland, and Ethan Lee Hoagland; two sisters, Janet K. Kitner (husband, Kerry) of Jacksonville and Kimberly J. Fay of Kincaid; a brother, Ronald D. “Hoagy” Hoagland (wife, Dawn) of Prentice; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Butch was a graduate of Ashland High School and served with the US Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. He has farmed in the Berea community of Morgan County for 30 years. He was a devoted member of Berea Christian Church serving as an elder. He was also a long time board member of Berea Cemetery.

Butch was a member of the Ashland and A-C Central School Boards for many years including over 16 years of service as Board President. He was a long time member and past commander of the Ashland VFW Post #3546.

An avid golfer, Butch enjoyed many golf trips with friends and participating in golf leagues. He was a well known numismatist who enjoyed building his coin collection and sharing his knowledge with friends at area coin shows.
