Harold E. Barfield, 80, of rural Pleasant Plains, IL died Sunday, February 21, 2010 at his home.He was born January 14, 1930 in Naples, IL; the son of Lester and Helen Lindsey Barfield. He married Betty Lou Harrison on February 14, 1953 and she preceded him in death on January 23, 1997.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Brewer (husband, Mike) of Pleasant Plains and Alice Kern (husband, Dan) of Pleasant Plains; five grandchildren, Nick Kern (wife, Ashton), Nathaniel Kern, and Tyler Kern, all of Pleasant Plains, Tiffany Roe of Springfield, and Chris Brewer (wife, Sarah) of Billings, MT; three brothers, Lester Barfield (wife, Janie) of Jacksonville, John Barfield of Mt. Sterling, and Jim Barfield (wife, Karen) of Jacksonville; three sisters, Louise Briggs of Mulberry, FL, Sarah Ann Varner of Meredosia and Shirley DeJaynes of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rosalie Stark.

Mr. Barfield served with both the US Air Force and later with the US Army during the Korean War. He was a grain and livestock farmer in the Pleasant Plains-Salisbury area for over 30 years. Harold loved and respected the land that he farmed and all the wild animals that resided there. In addition he worked as a bus driver for Pleasant Plains School District and later as a custodian for Farmingdale Elementary School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ashland where he formerly served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed the young children of the church and always carried a treat to share with them.
