Grace Auten, the daughter of C. Frank and Maude P. (Phillips) Adams, was born May 2, 1901 in Killduff, Iowa.  She was a graduate of Newton High School in 1920.  Grace moved to the Kellogg, Iowa area in 1922.  She later attended Iowa State Teachers College and Drake University.

On June 4, 1927, Grace was united in marriage to Jay M. Auten at her family’s farm in Killduff.  Grace taught school at Buena Vista No. 1 Country School for seven years, and then substitute taught for a few years.  In 1956, she returned to teaching full time as a 5th grade teacher at Kellogg Elementary, where she remained until retiring in 1970.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jay in 1980; and her daughter, Barbara Baker in 1997.  Those left to honor her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, J. Morris and Judith Auten of Schaumburg, Illinois; her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and John Berthelsen of Kellogg; her twelve grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren; and her sister, Evelyn Renaud of Newton.
