Glenn Elmo Howard spent the first part of his life in Davenport Iowa. As a member of the “greatest generation”, he was too young for the beginning of WWII but he quit high school when he was 17 to join the Navy in 1945. He often said he got to fight the battle of Puget Sound as a crewmember of aircraft carrier escort that trained pilots for combat landing on carriers.
