SALEM: Mrs. Gladys Emily Elizabeth Riggs Gilbert passed from this life while her son Jack held her hand and she was surrounded by her family. She is survived by a daughter, Pamela Riggs Schmuck of East Canton; son, Jack F. Gilbert of Salem; a daughter, Natalie S. Gilbert of Akron, Ohio and grandchildren, Gwnevere Schmuck Rhoads and Michael Schmuck of East Canton, Ohio as well as great grandson, Joel. Mrs. Gilbert was a long time teacher in Salem, Ohio. She taught at Reilly, Prospect and McKinley Schools. Before, she taught at Trinity Street School in Los Angeles, Benwood High School in West Virginia and was a principal at Sherrard School near Wheeling, W. Virginia. Mrs. Gilbert earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at West Liberty State Teachers’ College in West Virginia. She also attended Duke University in North Carolina, the University of New Mexico and the University of West Virginia at Morgantown. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Order of the Eastern Star, Salem Garden Club, Salem Historical Society and a member of the Salem Methodist Church. She was also a lifetime member of the Teacher’s Union. Mrs. Gilbert was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Harry and Della (Sweeny) Riggs. Her Father, Mr. Riggs, was a union iron worker specializing in bridges. He served his country in the Spanish American War. Mrs. Riggs was a devoted mother. Mrs.
