Gladys E. (Gladie) Widemire, 89, of Williamsport, died Monday, January 24, 2011 at the Valley View Nursing Center.

Born September 29, 1921 in Lock Haven, she was the daughter of Frank J. and Elsie E. Myers Widemire.

Gladys was a graduate of Williamsport High School, Class of 1939, she was a two-year music major at the former Dickinson Junior College, now Lycoming College, and earned credits in art education at Mansfield University.

Her father was a well-known photographer and owned Widemire Studio on West Fourth Street. Gladys worked with her father for many years and became the official photographer for Avco Lycoming, now Textron Lycoming, for 22 years. Later in life she served as photographer for the Williamsport Area School District where she also taught the art of photography to teachers as well as students. She also took pictures of the classes of the Consistory for 50 years. Following her father’s death, she continued on her own, serving 62 years as a photographer until 2000.

Gladys was a 78-year member of Pine Street United Methodist Church, member of the United Methodist Women and at one time played in the handbell choir, known as the Bellaires, in the late ’80’s. She was a life member of the Williamsport Chapter and more recently a member of the Monsey Chapter 481, Order of the Eastern Star. She was an associate member of the Duboistown Garden Club and a 20-year member of the Lycoming Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, with Pvt. William Bloom her ancestral patriot.

Gladys enjoyed collecting stuffed Teddy Bears, Hummel figurines, porcelain dolls, photographic memorabilia, old photographic figurines and old cameras. Her many friends will miss her wit and warm compassion.

Surviving are cousins, Ruth Lupold and John (Dotty) Lupold both of Jersey Shore; Howard (Sharon) Lupold of Cogan Station; Zora (James) Carson of Matthews, NC; Grant (Connie) Lupold of Jersey Shore; Thomas Duck of Lewisburg and the Rev. Thomas Davison of Baltimore, MD.

Gladys was predeceased by a cousin, Robert Lupold.
