Gilmer Harvey Yates, 83, of 107 Bent Creek Road, Danville died Sunday, February 6, 2011 in the VA Medical Center, Salem, VA. Born May 30, 1927 in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Loy Sanford Yates, Sr. and the late Lila Finch Yates. Gil was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a loyal follower of his Christ. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church and taught Sunday School and served as a deacon for many years. He was a charter member of the Sertoma Club and was active in Gideons International. Gil was also an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a graduate of the College of William and Mary where he received a B. A. degree in Economics. He was formerly employed as manager of production planning for Dan River and was a veteran of the United States Navy. He is survived by his wife, Glenn Rogers Yates of the residence. In addition to his wife, Gil is survived by his daughters, Penny Yates Goodwin and husband, Robert B. Goodwin, Jr. of Roanoke, Laura Yates Smith and husband, the Rev. Kirby D. Smith of Midlothian, and his son, Jeffrey G. Yates and wife, Terry Profilet Yates of Chesapeake. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Lee Jones and Barbara Ann Kendall, both of Blairs, and his grandchildren, Bently Yates Goodwin, Stephanie D. Smith, Nathanael Kirby Smith, Samantha P. Yates and J. Tyler Yates. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Rebecca Adams, Edith Shankland, Lila Belle Yates and Dorothy Jean Yates and his brothers, Chesley R.Yates, Sr., Frank Yates, Parker Yates and L. S. Yates, Jr.
