Gilbert V. “Gib” Stewart, age 77, of Newnan passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife and best friend of 55 years, Elizabeth D. “Betty” Stewart, two daughters and son-in-law, Debbie S. Pack of Newnan, GA, and Sherri and Phillip G. Gregg of Chucky, TN. Two granddaughters, Merideth C. Pack of Tampa, FL. and Lilly E. Gregg of Chuckey, TN. He was preceded in death by son-in-law and close buddy, Larry G. Pack, and his cherished and beautiful granddaughter, Mallory E. Pack. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and was an active supporter and participant in the lives and activities of all his family members.

In addition to his immediate family, Mr. Stewart is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, David P. and Marlene S. Stewart of Panama City Beach, FL. and George C. and Margaret T. Stewart of Columbus, GA.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Grace S. Stanton of Highlands Ranch, CO. and Jane S. and Don L. Machen of Auburn, AL., Sister-in-law Sue D. Etheridge of Roswell GA. and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Mr. Stewart was born September 19, 1936, in Menominee, MI., the third of five children of the late Calvin G. and Elizabeth G. Stewart.

After spending his early years in Appleton, WI, the family moved to Sylacauga, AL in 1951. Following High School in 1954, Mr. Stewart joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a Sonar man aboard the U.S.S. Whippoorwill MSC 207, on the West Coast and the far East. Following his Navy enlistment, he enrolled at Auburn University where he earned a BS degree, and later the University of Tennessee where he earned an MS degree. On August 31, 1958, Betty and Gib were married in the First Methodist Church in Sylacauga and began their long life together.

Following graduation from Auburn University in 1960, Mr. Stewart began his business career with Huyck Corporation in Aliceville, AL. plant. In 1965 he and his family moved to Greenville, TN. where he became a Personnel Manager of Huyck’s Formex Company, followed by positions in training, management development, sales, and marketing at various other Huyck locations. In 1981 he took early retirement from Huyck and joined Control Equipment Company, starting up their new TN sales office in Greenville. In 1955 he took early retirement from CEC and started his own business, Instrumentation Specialists, Inc., in Greenville. In 2001 Mr. Stewart sold ISI, continuing to work with the new owners in a consulting capacity as long as his health permitted. Mr. Stewart was a member of The First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, TN beginning in 1965 where he served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, and previously The First Presbyterian Church of Aliceville, AL where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He also served as a Boy Scout leader, and later as a Volunteer at Laughlin Hospital in Greenville.
