Giancarlo Traverso passed on October 15th, 2019, around 2:10 AM, surrounded by his closest friends and family. True to his character, he spent the final moments of his life selflessly caring for others, despite his battle with cancer.

Gian was born on August 10th, 1956 to Peter and Pasqualina Traverso in the Bronx, New York City. Gian and his younger sister Anna Vecchio née Traverso grew up on Bathgate Avenue in the care of their loving parents. After graduating from Bedford Park Academy in 1974, he served for 38 years as a Railroad Traffic Controller for Metro-North, formerly Conrail, and was a proud member of the Association of Commuter Rail (ACRE) Local 113. Gian married his wife Linda Traverso née DiGiacomo on August 8th, 1992. The couple spent the next 27 years building a life together in Westchester, New York.

Gian was known by many names: Uncle Gian, Stani, Gianni Bananas, Gianni garlic-and-oil, or Gianni Choo-Choo. Regardless of what you called him or how you knew him, all felt his love and compassion. He always had time for his family and to him, everyone was family. Gian’s kindness and generosity was endless, no ask was ever too big. Throughout his life, Gian worked tirelessly to provide for those he loved. He showed his love through cooking us too much food, relentlessly asking if there was anything he could do to help, or teasing us until we cracked a smile. He was eternally grateful for his family, friends, and the life he lived, and never let anyone forget his gratitude. Truthfully, no words will ever be able to do this man justice.

Gian is survived by his loving wife Linda and wonderful sister Anna. He taught those who were lucky enough to know him how to truly love and care for one another. Gian’s legacy will live on through countless cousins, in-laws, friends, nephews and nieces, who absolutely adore him.

We love you, Giancarlo.

Entombment to follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in the Rosewood Mausoleum.
