Gertrude “Trudy” Pekrul slipped away peacefully in her bed on Sunday, February 8th facing the photo of her beloved husband Frederick R. Pekrul, Sr.. Trudy was born in Sharon, CT; the daughter of Raymond S. Lovell and Clara E. (Jarvis) Lovell. Trudy was one of five children including a twin brother, Tom. She married Fred Pekrul on February 4, 1944 in Atlanta, GA prior to Fred’s tour of duty with Patton’s 3rd Army. While Fred was overseas Trudy worked as a bookkeeper at a local department store and stayed in correspondence with her husband. When Fred returned from the war the couple moved for Fred’s work and started a family. After 10 years the couple bought their own dairy farm on South Road in New Hartford, CT. Fred always gave Trudy credit with a sense of pride and amazement regarding her ability to do so much for the family. Fred always said, “I don’t know how she did it all, I couldn’t have done it without her.” She mentioned as a child growing up funds where limited in the Lovell household. She dressed her children in the best available. Fred once mentioned Trudy had spent more on the children’s school clothes than the monthly farm mortgage. The source of a chuckle 60 years later, surely it wasn’t at the time. The couple sold the family farm and Gert decided to return to work at the Avon Convalescing Home for a brief period. Trudy enjoyed reading, puzzles, going to lunch with friends, assisting at church and donating time to raising funds for the Bakerville Library. She loved to travel and traveled several times across country, to Europe, a Western Caribbean Cruise and day drives in the county. Gert and Fred enjoyed day trips and weekends away to visit family and friends. Fred always called her Gert. It was in the last years of her life she mentioned she never liked the name Gert. Her preference was Trudy. Trudy was preceded in death by her husband Frederick R. Pekrul, Sr; son, Mark Pekrul and grandson, Joseph Altieri. She is survived by her son, Frederick R. Pekrul, Jr wife (Colleen); daughter, Penelope L. Pekrul; son, Brian P. Pekrul; special family friend, Huau Bently; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
