Gertrude T. Day, 85, of Wooded Way in South Bend, IN, passed away at 8:45am Wednesday, March 1, 2006 in her residence.

She was born on December 1, 1920 to the late Adam and Gertrude (Pfluge) Stein in Jersey City, NJ, and has lived in South Bend since 1990, coming from Munster, IN, where she had lived for 15 years. Along with her parents; four sisters, Rose McDonald, Margaret Deitrich, Marie Kantor, Dorothy Schweigerath; and two brothers, Edward Stein, and Francis Stein all preceded her in death.

Mrs. Day retired in 1982 from Carson Pierie Scott Department Store in Hammond, IN, after 15 years of employment.

On June 7, 1947, as Gertrude T. Stein, she married Hugh T. Day, Sr. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Keyport, NJ. He survives.

Along with her husband Hugh, of 59 years, she is survived by three daughters, Patricia (David) DeReamer of Hilton Head, SC; Kathleen (John) Cain of Hixson, TN; Mary (Richard) Bonilla of Tampa, FL; one son, Hugh T. (Deborah) Day, Jr. of Lowell, IN; 13 grandchildren, Tammy (John) DeReamer-Hiester of Seymour, IN; Amy (Eric) DeReamer-Allen of Westport, IN; Kimberly DeReamer of Hilton Head, SC; David (April) DeReamer of Charleston, SC; Kelly (Timothy) DeReamer-Paxton of Bluffton, SC; John (Jennifer) Cain III of Aberdeen, NC; Erin Cain of Tampa, FL; Daniel (Laura) Cain of Cleveland, TN; Matthew Cain of Hixson, TN; Ryan (Andrea) Day of Lowell, IN; Nicholas Day, Zachary Day, and Ashleigh Day, all of Lowell, IN; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara (Arnold) Lauer of Howell, NJ; Kathleen (Frank) Zahn of Matawan, NJ;one brother, Adam Stein of Holmdel, NJ; and two sisters-in-law, Rae Stein of English Town, NJ; and Dorothy Stein of Freehold, NJ.

Mrs. Day was a member of Sacred Heart Parish at the University of Notre Dame.
