Gerald “Jerry” John Mahle, age 74, of Catharpin, VA died Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the Inova Fairfax Hospital surrounded by his son, several grandchildren, nephew and wife and close family friends. He was born on June 9, 1943 in Rochester, NY, the son of the late Don R. Mahle and Angelina (Marchello) Mahle. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the United States Marine Corps and was a retired mechanic for UPS. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Jean Mahle and two children; his son Scott and daughter, Kim. Survivors include his son, Keith A. Mahle; five grandchildren, Amy Mahle, Taylor Mahle, Amanda McDermid, Robert McDermid, Sean McDermid; three sisters, Marcie Mahle, Donna Saturno, and Gladys Domina and numerous people fortunate enough to call themselves friends. However, the facts as listed above can barely begin to express the remarkable qualities of Jerry Mahle. He was the faithful partner of his wife Gloria; her champion, quiet counterpart and finest caregiver until the day she died. He was the proud father and grandfather of three children and five grandchildren, and the friend of many in the community. He was possessed of a calm demeanor and a fine sense of humor (with a healthy dose of sarcasm thrown in for effect). He was the type of person you would dial first when faced with a crisis. Jerry was the voice of reason, laced with compassion. If you managed to get him angry; you knew that you had worked long and hard to stoke a slow burn into a fire. Jerry was an individual blessed with the capacity to fix everything from copy machines to dishwashers and automobiles. He could build porches, fix plumbing problems and build fences. What’s more, he didn’t hesitate to use those talents on behalf of friends and family. Jerry was a model of selfless giving. His life expressed are lavished upon family and friends. He was a man who had lost much in his life, but persevered in the face of that loss to live bravely and compassionately. To say that he will be missed by those who called him father, grandfather and friend is an understatement. The world is not the same with him gone.
