George W. Hicks, Jr. George W. Hicks, Jr., 84 of Rock Spring died Monday, January 15, 2007. Mr. Hicks served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, having reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He flew 65 missions over Europe for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and an air medal with 12 clusters. After the war he was a civilian flight instructor for nine years in Bainbridge, GA where he trained pilots for Southern Airways. He returned to the North Georgia area where he, and his brother Harry, formed Hicks Brothers Construction. The son of the late George W. Hicks, Sr. and Eva Mae Bice Hicks he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Joe Hicks, Charles Hicks, and Lawrence Hicks. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty Hicks, Rock Spring; daughters and sons in law, Karen and Bill Loughridge, Lafayette, GA, Ginger and David Van Kirk, Savannah, GA; grandsons, Cole Loughridge, Atlanta, Josh and Summer Loughridge, Lafayette; great grandson, Carter Loughridge; brother and sister in law, Harry and Barbara Hicks, Rock Spring; sisters and brothers in law, Norma and David Winget, Chattanooga, Elizabeth and Bill Garner, Cumming, GA; sisters in law, Frances Hicks, Bessemer, AL, Nelle Hicks, Rock Spring; several nieces and nephews.
