George W. Bare, 79, of South Russell, OH passed away peacefully Monday morning, May 22nd, 2023 at home while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Niles, Michigan on October 29th, 1943 to the late Herbert D. and Donna (DeWitt) Bare. George later married the love of his life and best friend, Julie Brattin on November 24th, 1967.

He was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran who also graduated with a B.A. Degree from the College of Wooster. An outstanding athlete, George played football and baseball at Wooster where he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.  He continued playing football while in the Navy, playing alongside Roger Staubach for the Goshawks at NAS Pensacola.  After the Navy, George developed a passion for youth sports, coaching baseball and working as an official for USA Swimming and for the Ohio High School Athletic Association (known among swimmers as Dr. DQ).  In his youth, George enjoyed many adventures as a Boy Scout and working on his uncle’s farm.  He had a soft spot for all animals, especially dogs.  He loved to spend his home time walking his dogs, gardening, and building/repairing anything and everything.

George will be greatly missed by: his loving wife of 55 years, Julie Bare; children, Carolyn (Frans) Cronje, George “Bill”(Jeremy) Bare Jr., Elizabeth “Betsy”(Kurt) Tietjen; grandchildren, Elizabeth “Libby” Bare, Sydney Bare, Marieke Tietjen, Conor Tietjen, Freddie Tietjen, Willem Cronje, George “Billy” Cronje; sister, Carolyn (John) Deckard; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  He is preceded in death by: his parents, and sister, Dorlea Watson.
