George Rison Byrd, 84, of 4836 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, VA died Sunday, March 20, 2011 while a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home. Mr. Byrd was born June 12, 1926 in Pittsylvania County, VA and was a member of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was also a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army on active duty in the Korean War. For 25 years Mr. Byrd was an Insurance Sales Associate with Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance, now known as Lincoln Financial Group. After his retirement from Jefferson Pilot he worked as a security guard at Danville Community College. Mr. Byrd was the son of the late Estelle Payne Byrd and the late William Bryan Byrd. He was married to Sybil Stowe Byrd of the residence. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard Byrd of Jamestown, NC and two brothers, Harry Byrd of Emporia, VA and William “Bill†Byrd of Danville. Mr. Byrd is predeceased by three sisters, Ruby Watson, Edna Howerton, and Jane Lewis. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Dry Fork, VA with Rev. Joe M. Beck conducting the service. Interment will be at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the church and at other times they will be at the residence at 4836 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork, VA.
