George "Nick" Ernest Nichols Jr.

On Tuesday morning, October 26, 2021, George “Nick” Ernest Nichols Jr, devoted husband, and father of 6, passed away at the age of 77. His wife was by his side.

Nick was born to Edna Elizabeth Archbold and George Ernest Nichols on July 26, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from Highland High School and went on to study mechanical engineering at the University of Utah. He loved the Ute football and basketball teams.

Nick served in the Army National Guard, going on to Officer’s Candidate School, graduating as a Second Lieutenant in 1972.

Nick married his sweetheart, Gwynne Roberts, on July 1st, 1972, in Ogden, Utah. They were sealed together in the Ogden LDS Temple, on February 7th, 1976.

Nick worked for Thiokol from 1972 to 1988, as a mechanical engineer. His work there included time spent on the Space Shuttle Program. He also worked for Northrop Grumman from 1989 until his retirement in 2009. His expertise was used in improvements on the Minuteman Missile.  

Nick was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He held various callings over the years, his most treasured among them being the opportunity he had to serve as a service missionary on Temple Square. Alongside his wife, in numerous capacities, he served at the Church Events held on Temple Square over a 20-year period.

Nick was a dear husband and friend to his wife. He treated her with great love and respect. He holds a special place in her heart. He is survived by his dear wife, Gwynne, and his children: Kristin (Roger) Smout, Kerri Crawford, Tricia (Ken) Buss, Marci (Randon) Reed, Jaime (Brian) Cragun, Tyler Nichols, and 16 grandchildren.
