Dr. George Malcolm MacNabb, Jr., 73, of Newnan, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2014 at his home. He was born May 8, 1941 in Newnan to the late George Malcolm MacNabb and Ella Parks MacNabb. After graduating from Newnan High School, where Dr. MacNabb was the valedictorian of his class, he enrolled at Emory University. There, he was initiated into the Kappa Alpha Order and tapped into the Emory’s most prestigious honorary society, DVS. Dr. MacNabb went on to Emory Medical School and later to an internship at Grady Hospital. It was the Vietnam era, and soon he was notified by the Coweta County Draft Board that his number was up. To meet this obligation, he volunteered for service in the United States Navy. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant Commander and stationed in Key West, FL, for 3 years. While there, he served briefly as the ship’s doctor on a submarine. Following the completion of his military tour and his residency, Dr. MacNabb attained board certification in internal medicine and returned to Newnan where he joined the PAPP Clinic. Later, he opened a private practice in Newnan. Subsequently, he attained board certification in addiction medicine and served on the staff of the Talbott Recovery Center in Fulton County, where he was known as a dedicated physician and ardent anti-smoking advocate. After retiring from his medical practice, he pursued many hobbies, including genealogy and orchid cultivation. His extensive home library reflected his love of history and of the Nero Wolfe mysteries (of which he owned the entire series). He cherished visits from his grandchildren and loved to demonstrate a new toy or gadget for them. He was a generous benefactor to many organizations. Because of his many years as a physician of addictive medicine, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Talbott Recovery Centers, 5448 Yorktown Drive, Atlanta, GA 30349. Dr. MacNabb is survived by his son, Benjamin (Lesleigh) MacNabb of Newnan; his daughters, Dr. Lisa (William) McGregor of Hummelstown, PA, Amy Hughes of Moreland, Kathryn (Michael) Head of Newnan, and Beth MacNabb of Newnan; his brothers, Joseph (Patricia) MacNabb of Newnan, and William (Cynthia) MacNabb of Decatur, GA; his sisters, Midge Neuman (Jon) of Flower Mound, TX and Dr. Elizabeth MacNabb of Georgetown, TX; his grandchildren, James and Kathryn McGregor of Hummelstown, PA, Kristen (Bren) Rivers of Franklin, Taylor Hughes of Cypress, TX, Joel, Madison, and Sheaden Hughes of Moreland, Leland and Hayes MacNabb of Newnan, Patrick and Connor Head of Franklin; his great-grandchildren, Samuel and Bryeir Rivers of Franklin; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
