George John Cocores, 84, of Middletown, husband of Evelyn (Bodge) Cocores for 52 years, passed away on Friday, September 5th at Middlesex Hospital after a two year battle with cancer. Born in Stamford, he was the son of the late John and Bertha (Arahovites) Cocores. During World War II he served with “A” Battery 112th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in Africa and Europe. He graduated from Arnold College, did graduate work at Southern Connecticut College and earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Hartford. He was an administrator for 33 years in Regional School District #13 in Durham, retiring in 1984. He was active in many organizations until a few months ago: Summer Camp Director of Stamford Boys’ Club, Durham Planning Commission, Teacher of Adult Education in Middletown and Region #13, Vice President of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, YMCA Board of Governors, Secretary of Middletown Sports Dinners, Director on Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, Co-Chair of Sports and Events Committee and the Golf Committee for the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, President of Middletown Giants-New England Collegiate Baseball League, Durham Fair Foundation, Director of Head of the Connecticut Regatta, and he was a life member of the Ponus Yacht Club in Stamford. He received many awards over the years: President’s Award, Connecticut Elementary Principals’ Association Award, Good Sport Award, Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance, U.S. Humane Society Award, and the Chamber of Commerce Good Guy Award. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Cathi Lepore and her husband, Edward of Ivoryton; his son, George Cocores, Jr. and his wife, Jill of Bend, OR; his sister, Catherine Dial of Fairfield and his four precious grandchildren with wonderful memories of their “Papou”, Camden Cocores, and Nicholas, Alexander, and Sage Lepore. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Carlucci and Mary Georges and his brother, Peter Cocores.
