George Edward Johnson, Sr (known as Ed), 92, passed away on January 12, 2015 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center after undergoing an operation for a broken hip followed by illness. Mr. Johnson was born on January 19, 1922 in Newnan, Georgia, Coweta County to Wilbur W. Johnson and Eunice C. Johnson, formerly of Turin, Georgia, Coweta County. He was the oldest of three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. Ed graduated from Newnan High School in 1939 along with his future wife Helen Nadine Dye Johnson, whom he met at the Senior Class Picnic. They were married on April 17, 1943 in South Carolina while Ed was in the Army at Fort Gordon, Augusta, Georgia.

Ed served in the Army during World War II from December 28, 1942 to March 2, 1946 with the 616th Military Police, Escort Guard Company in the American and The Asiatic Pacific Theaters of Operations. Ed and Nadine were members of the First United Methodist Church in Newnan, Georgia, where their son and daughter were born and christened. In 1958 they moved the family to Albany, Georgia and were members of the Porterfield United Methodist Church. Then in 1961 they moved to Gainesville, Georgia, where they joined St. Paul United Methodist Church and have been members for the past 53 years. Mr. Johnson’s greatest joy was his family and his church.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Johnson is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Hazel Johnson Day and brother-in-law Jim Day formerly of Dallas, TX and brother-in-law J.T. Williams, formerly of Newnan, GA. He is survived by his son George Edward Johnson, Jr and wife Mary Dixon Johnson of Hoschton, Georgia; and his daughter Helen Johnson Elliott and husband Danny Silas Elliott of Gainesville, Georgia; sister, Willene Johnson Williams of Newnan, Georgia; brother-in-law, Arthur Hugh “Buster” Dye of Newnan, Georgia; grandchildren Christopher Elliott and wife Kara Elliott of Flowery Branch, Georgia; Amanda Johnson of Angleton, TX; Shanna Johnson du Mont and husband Justin du Mont of Chesterton, IN; Lindsay Elliott Mahoney and husband Ryan Mahoney of Marietta, Georgia; Mary Elliott Bleichner and husband Mark Bleichner of Roswell, Georgia; Kimberly Reignier of Flowery Branch, Georgia; great grandchildren Andrew Elliott of Gainesville; Corinne du Mont and Natalie du Mont of Chesterton, IN; Ava Elliott and Owen Elliott of Flowery Branch, GA; Allison Mahoney of Marietta, GA; Sydney Roach and Mackenzie Reignier of Flowery Branch, GA.
