George Bernard Franklin, 84, of 3687 Dillons Fork Road, Fieldale, VA, died Friday, January 28, 2011. He was born in Henry County, VA on March 20, 1926, and was the son of the late Henry Harrison Franklin and Della O’Brien Franklin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Franklin Martin, and Ruth Franklin Graybeal; two brothers, Leonard Franklin and James Franklin. Mr. Franklin grew up in the rural Sanville area of Henry county with his large family. He entered Navy at the young age of 17 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Rockaway and the USS Humboldt, including serving on the flagship during the Normandy Invasion. After completion of his military service, Mr. Franklin settled in the Fieldale area. He was a skilled house builder, was the proprietor of Franklin’s Antiques, and a maker of fine furniture for many years. He was a member of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer and sang duets with his wife, Frances. Surviving are his wife, Frances Long Franklin of the home; daughter, Linda Franklin Hube of Durham, NC; two sisters, Mildred Franklin Joyce of Virginia Beach, VA and Aileen Franklin Fleming of Martinsville, VA; one brother, William Franklin of Martinsville, VA; two grandchildren, Alex Franklin Kuretz of Fort Collins, CO, and Amelia Fern Hube of Durham, NC; and two great-grandchildren, Jack and Zack Darbie Kuretz of Ft. Collins, CO.
