George Barrett Leckonby Jr., 89

West Sand Lake George Barrett Leckonby Jr., 89, of Route 43 died Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a brief illness.

Born in Owensboro, KY, he was the son of the late Rev. George B. Leckonby and Katherine (Bader) Leckonby and husband for 63 years of Martha Couchot Leckonby.

His father being an Episcopal Rector, George resided where his father had churches including, Kentucky, Greenville, OH, at Trinity in Watervliet and Church of the Ascension in Troy. He had resided the past 51 years in West Sand Lake and was educated at Country Day School and Troy High School.

During World War II, George worked for General Electric and later worked for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the housing department and for many years did radio and television sales and repair.

He was a member of Junior Chamber of Commerce, Sand Lake Historical Society and attended St. John’s Episcopal Church in Troy. George had many loves, in addition to his wife , children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a railroad enthusiast, had interest and was a member of the Steamship Historical Society, traveled the USA and followed the Russ Morgan Orchestra while enjoying all big band music. After his retirement, he was an avid reader.

Survivors in addition to his wife include three sons, G. Barry Leckonby III (Thania) of Averill Park, Robert S. Leckonby (Janice) of Queensbury and David L. Leckonby (Laurie) of Averill Park; a brother, William B. Leckonby (Amanda) of Bethlehem, PA; a sister, Katharine Couchot of West Sand Lake; five grandchildren, Amy Pratt (Stephen) of Malta, Gary Leckonby of Arlington, VA, George Leckonby IV (Aga) of Petersburgh, Roy Leckonby of Boulder, CO and Adam Leckonby of Averill Park; three step grandchildren, Allison B. Moeller (Jonathan) of Albany, Kierstin Barry (Bruce) of Lake Placid and Brian Michael Bradley of Charlotte, NC; four great grandchildren, William Pratt and Cody, Cameron and Hannah Barry; his companion, Chummy and several nieces and nephews.
