Gene K Davis 86, of Bloomington passed away on February 26, 2021 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital surrounded by his family.
Gene was born September 26, 1934 to Paul T and Oneta Douglas Davis.
Gene was a 1953 graduate of Bloomington High School and a 1957 graduate of Indiana University with a degree in Business. While at IU, he was a member of Acacia Fraternity and the Air Force ROTC.
Gene was a pilot and Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force upon his graduation from Indiana University. On October 18, 1958 he married the love of his life Julia Joann (Judy) Figg. They lived on Chennault Air Force Strategic Air Command base in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
After leaving the Air Force, Gene worked for Wetterau Foods, Inc. in Bloomington and served on the Board of Directors of Wetterau Wholesale Foods Inc. in St. Louis, Missouri. Upon his retirement from Wetterau, he owned and operated Elm Heights IGA and Brown County IGA for many years. During his retirement Gene split his time between Bloomington and Hutchinson Island, Florida. Throughout the years, he was known to proclaim, “I have had a great life”! He loved life, loved well, and was well-loved.
Gene was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Bloomington Country Club. He enjoyed sports of all kinds and had a passion for auto racing. If there was a sporting event to be seen, Gene was there. Indiana sports were of particular interest to him. Indiana University remained dear to his heart throughout his life. Gene was a member of the Indiana University Alumni Association and was a benefactor to his beloved university and the Indiana University Foundation. On September 14, 2012, he was admitted to The President’s Circle, which honors its most loyal donors.
Gene is survived by his four children, Julie Davis of Bloomington, Jill Beckham (Dave) from Crown Point, Indiana, John F Davis (Missy) of Bloomington, and Jeff Davis of Bloomington. He is also survived by ten grandchildren: Drew Adams (Brooke) of Peoria, Illinois, Amy Gene O’Leary (Marc) of Plainfield, Indiana, Aaron Adams of Bloomington, Muhammed Conteh (Adriana) of Portage, Michigan, Bailey Beckham of Indianapolis, IN. Alex Beckham of Crown Point, Reagan Beckham of Savannah GA, Jacob and Eli Davis of Bloomington, IN and Alaina Davis of Los Angeles, CA. Gene was also proud to be the great grandfather of seven.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother, William D Davis, and his in-laws, John R and Ione Light Figg, His wife of 39 years, Judy preceded him in death in 1997. Janet L May, his cherished companion later in life, also preceded him in death, as well as most of his dearest friends and golfing buddies.
