Gayl C. Sheets, 78, Lapel, Indiana (formerly of Fortville, Indiana) died Saturday at home. Gayl C. Sheets, was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana to Reland and Benjamin Sheets, who preceded him in death. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and upon his discharge was employed as an engineer for Western Electric and Indiana Bell Telephone, retiring after 37 years where he was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Gayl enjoyed the outdoors and loved to camp and hike in addition to working on his farm.

A past Elder and Trustee at the Fortville Christian Church, he also taught the College Class and was a past member of the Mission Team. Gayl was the past Worthy Patron of St. Mary’s Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star as well as the past Worshipful Master of Lodge 248 at both in Poe, Indiana. A Boy Scout Leader for several years, he was a past member of the Pendleton Heights Band Boosters.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Sheets; daughter, Rhonda (Brock) Brown of Fortville; son, Brice (DeLina) Sheets of Amarillo, TX; daughter, Susan (Tim) Banta of Charlotte, NC; step-son, Mitch Vanness, Lapel; brother, Paul (Pat) Sheets, Ft. Wayne. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Brittany Brown (Klint) Rupley, Lake Jackson, TX; Zach Brown (Stephanie Lee), Dallas, TX; Brandy Brown, Fortville; Patrick Sheets, Amarillo, TX; Mallory Sheets, Amarillo, TX; Emily Banta (Drew) Stanley, Ellettsville; Brett Moon, Amarillo, TX; Sean Banta, South Bend, and great-grandson, Landon Rupley, Lake Jackson, TX as well as several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by wife, Irene (Harrison) Sheets; wife, Sally (Boyd) Sheets; brother, Lowell Sheets; and great-granddaughter, Reece Rupley.
