Gary Lee Cardwell, 68, of 165 Breezewood Road, Collinsville, VA died Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro, NC. He was born on September 13, 1943 in Pittsburg, PA to the late Robert Cardwell and Jean Reynolds Cardwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lynn Cardwell Hamberger. Mr. Cardwell was a member and elder at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, Martinsville, VA. He received his BA, MA and PHD in History at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA and his JD from the University of Richmond, Richmond, VA. Mr. Cardwell was a History Professor at Ferrum College, Ferrum, VA. He was a retired attorney and was the Henry County Prosecutor from 1985-1992 and the first Public Defender of Martinsville, Henry County and Patrick County from 1993-2000. Mr. Cardwell was a member of the Virginia State Bar and Local Bar and had been a member of the Board of Directories of Grace Network in Martinsville where he volunteered. Also, he was an avid bridge and tennis player. Surviving are his wife, Ann Harper Cardwell; son, Neal Douglas Cardwell and wife, Genevieve Guenther of New York City, NY; step-son, Michael Harper Stephens and wife, Ashley Stephens of Greensboro, NC; step-daughter, Cynthia Stephens Bolling and husband, Courtney Bolling of Roanoke, VA; grandchildren, Teddy Cardwell, Evelyn Bolling, Christian Bolling, Katherine Stephens and Elena Stephens and aunt, Laura Coppinger of Chattanooga, TN.
