Gary Lamont Bridges was born on November 1, 1951, in Topeka, Kansas to his parents, Marion Harold Bridges and Sylvia Elizabeth Price Bridges. He was the second of seven children born to this union. He was raised surrounded by his brothers, Marion, Jr. “Boom”, Anthony, Keith, John, Kevin and his sisters, Damita Jo, and Christy Lavon. He was lovingly nicknamed, “Stykes,” by his family and friends. As a child, Gary played games with the family and kids, football, jacks, ping pong, basketball, and anything with a ball. He even won the Denver city marble championship in 1960. Gary graduated from Manual High School in 1969. While in high school, he was presented the All-City Football Quarterback award, and the All-City Baseball Pitcher of the year award. He furthered his education by attending Florida A & M on an football scholarship, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in 1974. Gary was extremely athletic, and studious. Gary was always proud of his accomplishments continuing on in his football career in the National Football League with the Houston Oilers from 1974 – 1976 and later with the World Football League. Gary also enjoyed working with youth as an athletic coach for the Montbello Recreation Center.
