Gary Charnow of Tavares, Fla., and a former long-time resident of Hurleyville, N.Y., died on February 3, 2021, following a lengthy illness. He was 85 years old.

 

Born to the late Max and Marsha (Molly) Charnow on July 26, 1935 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Gary grew up in Woodridge, NY and attended Woodridge and Fallsburg, N.Y., public schools.

 

Prior to his retirement in 1994, Gary was a printing instructor at Woodbourne Correctional Facility in Woodbourne, N.Y., a job he held for 25 years.

 

Gary served for many years as a volunteer firefighter with the Hurleyville Fire Department and was a member of the Liberty Lions Club and Liberty Elks Lodge. He also served in the Sullivan County Civil Air Patrol.

 

He is predeceased by his first wife Saundra and daughter Wendy. He is survived by his wife Harriet, of Tavares, Fla.; sisters Rissa Kornblith of Tampa, Fla., and Fredda Rosenberg and her husband Steve, of Sandia Park, N.M.; son Jody Charnow and his wife Ruth, of Cherry Hill, N.J.; daughter Dana Schmidt and her husband James, of Hurleyville; and grandchildren Michael Schmidt of Woodbourne, Amber Schmidt of Westtown, N.Y., Gillian Frances of Homestead, Fla.,, and Alexandra Charnow of Cherry Hill, N.J. He also is survived by several great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as lifelong friend Robert Hantman.
