F. G. ‘Fred’ Heumann, 84, of Mount Juliet, Tennessee, passed away in his sleep on May 27, 2022, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Fred was born August 4, 1937, in Queens, NY, and raised and educated in Brooklyn. He married Clara Palermo in 1955. They raised their five children in Brooklyn, New York; Anderson, South Carolina; and Toledo, Ohio.
He rose through the ranks at Owens Corning Fiberglas Corporation, from Draftsman to Senior Project Engineer to Manager, T & I Process Engineering, retiring as Director, Corporate Staff of the Administrative Services Division in 1993, after 33 years of service.
Fred had an intuitive engineering mind and was instrumental in bringing several OCF manufacturing plants online worldwide. He was known for his calm, confident management style, and sound leadership and was a mentor to many.
He and Clara were very involved with their church, St. Patrick’s in Toledo. Fred often attended morning mass, supported youth group ministry, and assisted the parish core staff.
In his spare time, Fred enjoyed building and constantly improving his home. He took on many large projects and soon was also building additions to the homes of his neighbors and friends from church. Fred contributed to all the churches he was part of spiritually and practically. He helped design and manage new construction for St. Joseph’s Church, Anderson, St. Patrick of Heatherdowns, Toledo, and First Presbyterian Church, Visalia, CA.
Fred was a founding board member of the ministry of Celebrant Singers in Visalia, California, an international music ministry focused on serving the Catholic Church. After 28 years in Toledo, Fred and Clara moved to Visalia when Fred became Chief Operating Officer in 1994. Clara was diagnosed with cancer in 1996 and passed away in February 1997.
Fred met Carleta Hamlin Jones of Tulare, California, and they married in March 1998. He and Carleta enjoyed traveling to Europe, China, and even an African safari in Kenya. They worked hard to blend their families across the country in this new season of life. While in Visalia, Fred was very involved in Rotary, and he and Carleta invested much in Kaweah Delta Hospital and the Tulare County Symphony League. Golf was very much a shared passion.
Along with his work at Celebrants, Fred served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Visalia. In 2013, Fred and Carleta moved to Mount Juliet, Tennessee, and enjoyed a second retirement.
He leaves behind his wife of 24 years, Carleta Heumann, Mt. Juliet, sons, Fred J. (Judie) Heumann of Franklin, TN, and Vinny (Tami) Heumann, Discovery Bay, CA; daughters, Sue Heumann, Austin, TX; Donna (John) Stolz, Fircrest, WA, and Theresa Marshburn, Maumee, OH; stepson, Scott (Colleen) Dobson, Mariposa, CA and stepdaughter, Vangi (Rod) Glover, Indio, CA.
Grandchildren Charlie (Alex) Heumann of Concord, CA, Brooke (Damien) Gulian of Ogden, UT, Kenny Heumann of Concord, CA, Emily De Shazo of Round Rock, TX, Joel Heumann of Highland Park, CA, Kenan (Carissa) Stolz of Vancouver, WA, Sgt. Josh Stolz of Vicenza, Italy, Michael Marshburn of Norfolk, VA, step-grandson Jacob (Christine) Dobson of Coarsegold, CA, and eight great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Clara Heumann, brother Robert C. Heumann, and parents, Charles Henry Heumann and Agnes Meyer Heumann.
The family would like to sincerely thank the entire staff at The Gardens at Providence Place in Mount Juliet for their care for Fred over these last 18 months. They were not just “caretakers;” they really cared for him.
A celebration honoring his life and legacy will be Saturday, June 18, at Providence Church United Methodist, 2293 South Rutland Road, Mount Juliet, TN 37122.
