He served on the USS Antietam as a torpedoman and was honorably discharged on May 8, 1946.  He then attended the University of Maryland on the GI bill and earned a BS in the College of Agriculture.  The next adventure took him to the University of Georgia where he was one of three students accepted from Maryland to the College of Veterinary Medicine where he earned his degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1955.  In 1956, Fred established the Everhart Animal Hospital on 3914 S.
