Fred May was born March 22, 1927 in Nelsonville, Ohio to Fred C. May and Ida Belle Murphy. He was the youngest of nine children. He began his working career as a coal miner. Fred enlisted in the United States Army, where he was a career veteran of the Vietnam and Korean Wars. Wherever he was stationed, he found the best fishing places and enjoyed taking his sons fishing and camping.

He retired from the Army in 1970 in El Paso, Texas. He started a janitorial business and also had an upholstery business on the side. In 1978, Fred and Wilma moved to Lake Roberts. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and walking in the woods near his home. On his 60th birthday his family purchased a horse for him. He enjoyed many hours of horseback riding with his wife and grandchildren. He was able to fulfill a lifelong ambition, to work as a cowboy on a ranch in the Mimbres Valley. He was one of the founding members of the Sapillo Creek Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department where he served for many years as a firefighter and First Responder. Fred will greatly be missed by his family and friends.
