Fred Marshall Gregg, Jr., Hall-of Fame athlete, insurance industry leader and Bible teacher to former President Jimmy Carter, died Thursday in Washington, D.C. Gregg, 78, was born and raised in Chattanooga and is still remembered as one of the city’s most notable athletes. He graduated from Chattanooga City High School in 1944 where he was recognized as an All-City athlete in football, basketball and baseball. However, it was on the baseball diamond that Gregg truly distinguished himself.
