Fred Albert Simons, passed away on January 5, 2015 at the Glastonbury Health Care Center where he had been a resident since May of 2014. Fred, 89, was born on May 7, 1925 in New Britain, CT. He was the first child of the late Clifford and Catherine (Parker) Simons. His family moved to Cromwell shortly thereafter where he lived until moving to Florida after his retirement. Fred moved back to Connecticut to be near his daughter during her period of failing health. Fred spent most of his winters working for fuel oil companies. During his younger years, he drove for Rackliffe Oil of Cromwell. Over the years, he also drove oil tankers for J. J. Vinci of Middletown and Hess Oil of Wethersfield. During most summers, Fred would work for the family business, Simons Excavating of Cromwell. Fred owned and operated a discount gas station in the early 1960’s. He worked for the Cromwell Water Company. Fred was a talented carpenter, working in numerous homes and building houses. Fred began building race cars in the 1940’s with his good friend, Stanley Swol. In the 1950’s, both Fred and his brother began what became known as the “Excavator Special #9” racing team. Fred was a loving father, who worked hard to provide his family with a good home.

Fred will be greatly missed by his loved ones and all his friends. Fred’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Glastonbury Health Care Center and those who provided homecare during his later years.
