Mr. Frank J. Verlezza, 87, of West Haven, passed away after a battle with cancer, in New Haven on December 31, 2010. The long time area resident was born in the Bronx, New York and relocated to New Haven to live with family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Antonette (Gerardi) Verlezza, and daughter Diane Verlezza, both of West Haven, along with son Anthony F. (Beth)Verlezza of Danbury and grandson Michael (Alice)Verlezza of Foxboro, MA. He was the son of Anthony and Theresa (Moscato) Verlezza, of the Bronx. He is survived by one sister, Linda, a resident of New York, and was pre-deceased by sisters Lena, Marion, and Carrie, and brothers Vincent and Andrew. Mr. Verlezza was a combat veteran of World War II, having served in the China; Burma; India theater of the Pacific for more than three years, and participating in many battles throughout the campaign against the Japanese in that region as part of Merrill’s Marauders. After being honorably discharged, he spent over 30 years as a construction worker, and as a member of Laborer’s Local 455 of New Haven, working on many of the major building projects in the area, including restorations of both New Haven’s city hall, and the Union Railroad Station, along with several significant Yale University buildings including the Beineke Rare Book Library. A huge sports fan, Mr. Verlezza ardently followed his hometown New York Yankees and New York Giants football, watching every game with passion and enthusiasm. He was also a decade’s long fan of Yale football, and particularly enjoyed the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team.
