Father, brother, husband, grandfather, great grandfather and the boss, Francis was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 3, 2020. He passed away peacefully at his home with family at his side. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Bay City and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Tucson, AZ. The son of Archie and Alice (Brennan) MacMillan, Francis Maurice MacMillan was born December 30, 1928, in Bay City, Michigan in a house near the corner of Henry and Fisher Streets. He was engaged to Angelina Makiel after a blind date and married at St. Leocadia in Wilmerding, PA, on June 18, 1955. They were together over 51 years until Angie passed away on October 11, 2006.

Fran graduated from St. Joe’s High School and attended Bay City Junior College before graduating with a civil engineering degree from Michigan State University in 1950. He was hired by Austin Engineers in Midland and was player/coach of their office softball team. Fran then joined the United States Navy in 1951 and served on the USS Helena in the Pacific during the Korean War. He left the Navy shortly after he and Angie married. They moved to Saginaw and then to Bay City after Fran moved from Austin Engineers to Morris and Wesolek Architects. In 1963, Fran joined McClurg Associates of Pontiac to open McClurg and MacMillan Consulting Engineers in a small office on Salzburg. In 1987, Fran split from McClurg and renamed the company MacMillan Associates as sole owner. He retired in 1994. Fran worked on projects such as Flint Northern, John Glenn and other Bangor Township schools, Western, Faith Lutheran, St. Maria Goretti, St. Vincent DePaul, St. Francis in Lewiston, Michigan Sugar and many other schools, universities, churches and corporations around Michigan and the USA. Fran was a registered Professional Engineer in MI, WI, OH, FL and TX. He enjoyed working with many clients, associates, contractors and projects partners, and enjoyed hosting/attending the annual company Holiday Open House. After retirement, Fran took on project management for Bay City Schools, the St. Mary’s and St. Stan’s Church renovations as well as projects in Tucson, AZ.

Fran was a youth baseball coach, a member of the Bangor Township School board for 18 years, Serra Club, Rotary, Bay City Country Club, various church committees, various professional organizations, a lector, CCD director and Eucharistic Minister, and sang in a barbershop chorus as well as in church choirs. His game was golf in Michigan and at Tucson National, with his tee shot finding hole #15 at Bay Valley. He enjoyed playing cards and was a fierce competitor when playing Gin Rummy with his friends in Bay City and Tucson. Fran also loved to spend time at the cabin near Lewiston with family and friends riding in his ‘49 Willys. And the stories he could tell…..

Fran’s parents and in-laws, Joseph and Helena (Dlugosz) Makiel and great-granddaughter Ann Lucille O’Malley along with brothers-in-law James Hurley, Carl Jones and Donald Fencik, nephew Patrick Hurley, and special friend Nancy Bishop preceded him in death. Francis is survived by: one daughter, Dr. Maureen O’Malley, of Denver, CO; and three sons, Michael (Becky) MacMillan, Richard (Julie) MacMillan, Francis (Deborah) MacMillan, all of Bay City; eight grandchildren, Sean (Gena) O’Malley, of Denver, CO; Patrick (Aimée) O’Malley, of Prescott, AZ; Kyle MacMillan (Rachel Topping) of Okemos, MI; Dr. Katie (Nav) MacMillan-Rane of Morgantown, WV; Brennan MacMillan of Midland, MI; Alicia (Andrew) Martin of Bay City; Renee (Ken) Arnold of Essexville; Rachelle Schikorra of Midland; eleven great-grandchildren: Parker and Autumn O’Malley of Arizona, Sasha and Ryan O’Malley of Colorado, Riley and Lauren Schikorra of Midland, Claire, Marin and Carly Arnold of Essexville, and Graham and Annabelle Martin of Bay City; two sisters to whom Fran was very close: Madeline Hurley of Bay City and Nancy Jones of Tucson, AZ; sister-in-law, Wanda Fencik of Scottsdale, AZ, brother-in-law, Joseph (Patricia) Makiel of Monroeville, PA; and many nieces and nephews. While Fran lost many friends recently, his very good friends Mary Jo Sequin of Bay City, Rey Saegert of Utica, Virginia Bowler of Wisconsin and Phil Griffin of Arizona survive him.
