Francis L. “Boz” Shields, Jr., 85, of Bethlehem, died Monday, November 15, 2010, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Fountain Hill. He was the loving husband of Elizabeth C. (Ahlum) Shields. They were married for 66 years this past Thursday, Nov. 11th. Born in Bethlehem on Christmas Day in 1924, he was the son of the late Francis and Julia (Salady) Shields, Sr. He was a graduate of Fountain Hill High School. Frank began his 38 year newspaper career a little more than one month after being honorably discharged from the Navy. During WWII, he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He started in January 1946 at the Globe-Times in Bethlehem as an advertising sales representative. In 1950, he moved from Bethlehem to manage the Globe-Times advertising office in Allentown. In 1952, he became advertising manager for the Levittown Evening Press. From 1954 to 1960, he worked at the McKeesport Daily News as the classified advertising manager. His career at the Morning Call began May 31, 1960, when he was hired as a sales representative. In 1969, he was promoted to assistant retail advertising manager and a year later became retail advertising manager. Frank was promoted to advertising sales director in 1981, and two years later was promoted to the Director of Advertising. Frank also worked part time as an agent for Erie Insurance Company. He was a past board member of the Call-Chronicle, Allentown YMCA and the Salisbury School Authority. He was a member of The Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the former Fountain Hill American Legion Post #406. He belonged to the Brookside Country Club and Coral Springs Country Club, where he loved to golf. He also enjoyed playing tennis, running, bicycling and was an amateur musician. Frank will be remembered for his love for his family and his random acts of kindness. Survivors: wife Elizabeth at home; daughters Gail Cope and her husband Edwin of Coopersburg, Patricia Glovas and her husband Anthony of Center Valley, Stephanie Carver and her husband George of Lower Macungie; son Thomas Shields of Salisbury Twp.; sister Dolores Shields of Lower Macungie; grandchildren Kimberly, David, Carolyn, Christopher, Daniel, and great-grandchildren Anthony, Kyle, Joseph, Zachary, Samantha, Donovan, Jacquelyn, Lauren, Olivia, Kaden, Maximillian, Landon and Kai.
