Floyd W. Porter, 68, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on Saturday, January 6, 2007, while vacationing in Cabo San Jose, Mexico.
He was born October 30, 1938 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Earl R. and Ruby (Korn) Porter. Floyd graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1956 where he was a member of the Future Farmers of America and the Warren Township 4-H. From1955-63 he served with the 460th Anti-Aircraft Reserve Unit while also taking over the family farm due to the death of his father and his brothers disabling farm injury.
On September 9, 1961, he married Paula Lou Quigley at St. Josephs Catholic Church in South Bend.
Floyd was the owner of Porters Dairy and Grain farm. With the help and support of his wife Paula and son Greg, the farm has taken many turns to make it the success that it is today. Floyd was one of the first farmers in the St. Joseph County area to comply years in advance to the conservation bill for no-till farming. He was also one of the first to raise ostriches. His knowledge and love of farming has been instilled in his son and grandson who will continue this family tradition.
Mr. Porter is survived by his wife Paula, his son Greg (Kim) of South Bend, his daughter Shari (Neal) Wagner of Beaver Creek, OH and four grandchildren, Sara and Austin Porter of South Bend, and Tara and Travis Wagner of Beaver Creek, OH. He is also survived by his eldest sister Doris (Bill) King of South Bend and his sister-in-law Maria Porter and his beloved Great Dane, Scooby-Doo.
Preceding Floyd in death are his siblings, Irene (Jim) Houchin and Lee Porter.
