Floyd Lyle Spaugh passed away November 24, 2015. Born November 5, 1924 in Columbus, Indiana, Lyle was the son of Floyd and Velma Spaugh. He graduated from Harrison Township High School in 1942 where he played on the basketball team. Immediately after high school, Lyle entered the Army and was eventually sent to Germany where he served with the 573rd AAA Battalion during WWII. It was in Germany, on March 17, 1945, that Lyle hit a land mine while driving a jeep.
After recovering from severe wounds, and enduring several months of rehab, he was honorably discharged from the military and returned to Markleville, married the former Mary Ellen Stohler, and worked in the petroleum industry, delivering fuel oil to individual homes, and farm equipment. Lyle’s strong Christian Faith was demonstrated through his involvement in church activities as a member of Castleton Church of the Nazarene and by his desire to help others. He spent many years as a Gideon member, passing out Bibles in schools, prisons, and to new military recruits. After the passing of his first wife, he spent time doing hospice volunteer work in his retirement town of Bradenton, Florida.
Lyle is survived by wife Claudette (Stephens), daughters, Pamela (Denny) Huebschman, Barbara (Roger) Barksdale, daughter-in-law, Sandi Spaugh, step-children, Kevin Stephens, and Kaylee Stephens, grandchildren, Kevin Spaugh, Lisa (Denny) Schnepp, great-grandchildren, Peyton Spaugh and Brady Vaughan, several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Lyle is preceded in death by his wife Mary Ellen, sister, Kathryn Jackson, son, Stephen Spaugh, and granddaughter, Leslie Anne Hulse.
