Florence E. Bates Wyland, 79, of Wilton, best known for being a caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died peacefully at home on August 13, 2011. She was the beloved wife of Alan Wyland. Born in Darien, CT on May 6, 1932, the daughter of the late Walter A. and Jessie (Pierce) Bates, she resided in Rowe, MA and Rowayton, CT before moving to Wilton.
Florence was a graduate of Darien High School and attended Connecticut State University.
Florence, along with her husband Alan, were part of Marriage Encounter and for several years traveled throughout the country presenting weekend retreats.
In addition to her husband, Florence is survived by two sons; Scott and his wife Michelle, Clifford and his wife Amy, in Bend OR, two daughters, Martha Wyland and her husband J. Edwin Hafstrom in Sublimity, OR, and Laura Donnelly and her former husband Robert Donnelly in Easthampton, MA, seven wonderful grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Myrtle Williams in CO, and Alice Stevens in Loudonville, NY, and brothers Walter in Norwalk, CT and Franklin and his wife Lois in Darien, CT. She was predeceased by a sister, Beatrice Sullivan and a brother, Ellwood.
