Fern I. Megge, 83, of Sawyer, Michigan, died Thursday evening, April 28, 2005 at Riveridge Manor in Niles, Michigan. Fern was born August 7, 1921 at her family home in Wakarusa, Indiana to Clement and Dessie (Grise) Hahn. She graduated from New Carlisle High School.
She believed in working hard and lived by the words “I did it my way”. Fern had nine children, raising seven of them on her own. She worked at Electro Voice in Buchanan and the Blue Chip Lounge in Harbert for 10 years. True to her motto, Fern started her own upholstery business and named it Fern Megge Upholstery. She sold Tupperware and Dutch Maid clothing during this same time. Fern retired from upholstering and went into business with her son Ronald Megge. Together they owned and operated Club Meg in Sawyer.
At the age of 73, Fern left the partnership and opened the Elm Street Diner in Three Oaks. It was here that she and her son Donald Megge began the annual dinner on Christmas Day for the homeless and for folks that did not want to spend the day alone. Fern was an independent personality with a wonderful sense of humor and she enjoyed a good joke.
Survivors include her children, Irene Shedrow, Ft. Charlotte, FL; James LaLone, Three Oaks; Fred (Sharon) LaLone, Buchanan, MI; Frank LaLone, Ft. Charlotte, FL and Donna (Gerald) Gothe of Sawyer; grandchildren, Rachel, Lois, & Todd Olson, Richard and Ron Olson, Angela Adkins, Jackie Shedrow, Jim and Erica LaLone, Dawn Hosford, Melinda Goll, Jack and Frank LaLone, Eric and Gregory LaLone, Carrie Patton and Jerud and Jerilyn Gothe; 24 great grandchildren, sister, Ethel (Lawrence) Hooten of New Carlisle; brother Leroy Jay (Gladys) Hahn of North Liberty, Sister-in-law Florence (Warren) Hahn of Mill Creek.
Other special people in her life include daughters-in-law, Carol Megge of LaPorte, LaFern (Mike) Bella and their son Mike of South Bend and Andrew and Mary Lou Megge of Roseville, MI. She was preceded in death by her children, Elmer Joseph Olson, Jack Eugene Olson, Ronald Warren Megge and Donald William Megge Jr., her brother, Warren, brother-in-law Lawrence and grandson Robert LaLone.
