Eugene L. Lizzi, 88, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 2, 2014 in Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. Gene was born on August 27, 1926 in South Bend to Carl Lizzi, Sr. and Julia (Fabian) Lizzi, and was a lifelong resident. He retired after 27 years on the South Bend Fire Department. He started April 3, 1951 on June 5, 1978 he retired. He served as a Private, a Lieutenant, and then Captain. He also worked as head of the Inspection Bureau for Arson and then he was Battalion Chief. Gene was a cook for the fire department for many years. After retiring he was the security guard at LaSalle High School and also John Adams High School. Later he then worked as a groundskeeper for St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. When he was young he sang in the choir. In his earlier days he enjoyed cooking, fishing, card playing and crossword puzzles. He always enjoyed being around his family and friends. Gene honorably served his country in the United States Navy during W.W. II. He was a member of the V.F.W. 8748 where was a bartender. On May 10, 1947 in St. Stanislaus Church he married Gloria Nowakowski, who preceded him in death on November 25, 2008. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Lizz, Jr. and Andrew Lizzi. Gene is survived by his daughter, Julie (Thomas) DeVon of South Bend, Indiana; his son, Michael (Julie Gonzalez) Lizzi of South Bend, Indiana; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Nina Lizzi of South Bend, Indiana.
