Mr. Eugene “Gene” Holst, age 80, beloved husband of 48 years to Nancy Brown Holst of Milford, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2009 in Milford Hospital.

 

Son of the late Herman J. and Virginia Hoar Holst, he was born on April 30, 1928 in Milford. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran in the Korean War and wrote home frequently during his tour of duty to request clothing be sent to him so he could help the Koreans he worked with.   

 

Gene retired from Alinabal in Milford in 1991 but remained active doing part-time work at Plastic Marking Specialists. He was a longstanding member of the American Legion Post 196 and the Milford Elks, where for many years he volunteered with Pop Warner Football.  

  

Gene was happiest on a boat. Through his lifetime he was an avid sailor, and he worked for a brief period as First Mate on Malcolm Forbes’ Yacht,  On land, he was a gentle man who rescued birds and injured wildlife and gave a home to more than a dozen stray cats over the years.

 

The family wishes him to be remembered for his kindness and generosity towards others. 

 

In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter Ella Holst, a son in law, Michael Strain, two granddaughters, Caroline and Jeannie Holst, a brother, Gordon Holst, two sisters, Susan McCoy, and Ellen Reeve and several nieces and nephews.
