Ethel Mae “Mick” Matthey, 92, of Cherry Camp, Salem, WV died Saturday, August 14, 2010 at United Hospital Center. Mrs. Matthey was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by four brothers, Stonewall Bunnell, Clifford “Buddy” Bunnell, Virgil Bunnell, and Van Bunnell; three sisters, Ava Phillips, Jennie Fox Windon, Weltha Freeman as well as their parents, Randolph and Dortha “Skinner” Bunnell. She was born in Adamston on January 15, 1918.
Mrs Matthey was educated at Bristol High School and then was married June 1, 1935, to Julius Raymond “Sam” Matthey and they enjoyed 70 years of marriage before his death in October, 2005.
They became parents of four children, Mrs. Nolan (Juanita) Emerson of Clarksburg; Mrs. Ronnie (Janet) Tate of Salem; Mrs. Harley (Connie) Cox of Williamstown; and Daniel Ray Matthey and wife Sandy of Salem.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren; Carrie (Carl) Brainand; Mary (Kevin) Lough; Doug Douglass; Teresa (Don) Treadway; Tracy (Mike) Newlon; Kimberly (Jason) Bartley; Crystal Matthey; and Daniel Matthey II.
They were also blessed with seventeen great-grandchildren, Loren (Toni) Brainard; Benjamin Brainard; Aaron Brainard; Kyan Douglass; Matthew and Cinda Newlon,; Bradley, Christopher, and Carly Treadway; Jacob, Caleb, and Nick Lough; Trevor and Haleigh Funk; Jonathan, Jaylen, and Julius “Jace” Bartley.
Also surviving is Arden Churchill, who was caregiver for Mrs. Matthey.
Mrs. Matthey was a member of Tenmile Church of Christ. She had worked in the nursery at United Hospital Center where she loved every new baby. She was devoted to her family, was very active in Relay for Life, was a member of Harrison Co. Senior Center where she enjoyed playing bingo as well as with the Salem “Ringo” Club. She crocheted and made quilts for her children and grandchildren, and did beautiful ribbon embroidery.
