Ethel Hamilton was born on July 12, 1927 in Eagle Springs, North Carolina to Janie McNeal and Albert Mitchel Martin. She graduated from Pinckney High School in Carthage, North Carolina. She has joined her siblings Nathaniel, Lydia, Ann, Sarah, Edith, Emma, Rose and Charlotte.
Ethel had a desire to leave her homestead and explore opportunities outside of Eagle Springs and went to live with her Aunt Vieta and Uncle Bert in Pennsylvania. She stayed a short time with her aunt and moved to Harlem to live with her sister Emma.
Ethel met Louis Hamilton in Harlem and on July 5, 1947 they were married. A few years after being married, they moved to Brooklyn, where their daughter Denise Ramona was born.
Ethel held many jobs but it wasn’t until she attended a keypunch (data entry) training class in the evening that her career took a drastic change. After graduation from the training school she worked at a shipping container company, ACL as a keypunch operator. Over the years she became the supervisor of the keypunch department which provided her the opportunity to travel to Europe to meet with her colleagues in Gothenburg.
Ethel was a member of Newman Memorial United Methodist Church for over sixty years and served in many capacities; Girl Scout leader, Floral Club and Communion Steward. She was a faithful member of the adult Sunday school class.
Ethel was always willing to show her love of God by helping people anywhere and at any time. She loved all children and she provided the children on the block a piece of candy with a smile anytime she saw them.
Ethel leaves to cherish in her memory: daughter, Denise R. Hamilton, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
