Ethel Evelyn (Oxley) Canterbury

Born in the community of Eva Oklahoma, Ethel and her family struggled through the hard hit panhandle of Oklahoma in the ‘Dust Bowl’ and ‘Great Depression’ in 1920’s & 30’s. However these years of difficult hardships formed a young woman into the wonderful, cheerful, survivor that her family has treasured for almost 100 years. Ethel obtained her teaching certificate in 1932 from Panhandle A & M in Goodwell, OK. She taught in one room schools for the next 5 years, while attending college in Goodwell until graduating from Panhandle A & M in 1937 with a degree in education. With her degree, she moved to Canon City with her family and taught at Fruitmere School for 2 years where she met and married her “Cowboy” Clarence Canterbury. Ethel and Clarence celebrated 58 years together. After raising her young family, Ethel returned to teaching at Madison & Harrison Elementary Schools. Ethel is survived by her daughter, Judy (Scott) Aeschlimann of Cortez, CO; son, Chris (Nancy) Canterbury of Canon City. Ethel has been blessed with 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ora Singleton Oxley and May Baughman-Oxley; three sisters; two brothers; her husband, Clarence in 1998; and two grandsons, John Aeshlimann and Rob Pearson.
