Esther Smith, age 89, of Algona, died on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Esther Pauline Scheppmann, the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Christoffer) Scheppmann, was born on October 8, 1923 in Whittemore, Iowa. She graduated from Algona High School in 1940. On November 8, 1942 Esther was united in marriage with David Smith at the First United Methodist Church in Algona. She had worked at the State House in Des Moines, she had managed a hotel in Santa Rosa, California while Dave served in the Navy during WWII, as a phone operator in Algona, for Farm Bureau and she did bookkeeping for Taylor Implement for 20 years. Esther was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lutheran Ladies Aid, Kossuth Regional Health Center Auxillary and had served as a Girl Scout Leader for 15 years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, playing bridge, golf, flowers, spending time at Okoboji and traveling all 7 continents. Left to cherish Esther’s memory is her husband of 70 years David; two daughters, Sharon M. Cashman and her husband Patrick of Lorton, VA and Diane L. McGuire and her husband Jim of Upper Marlboro, MD; a son, Neal H. Smith and his wife Nicole of Ivins, UT; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Minnie Studer, Frieda Gade and Laura Schmidt; and three brothers, Henry, Louis and LeRoy Scheppmann.
