Esther Julia Pauline Abels, 94, of Freeport died Sunday November 25, 2007 at Provena St. Joseph Center.
Born July 11, 1913, near Eleroy she was the daughter of Samuel and Elsie (Rampenthal) Gassman. Was a graduate of Lena High School Class of 1931. She and Marvin J Abels were united in marriage March 16, 1938 in Iowa. Marvin died January 23, 1946.A member of Second Presbyterian Church, Freeport IL Esther served as a Deacon of the church, a member of the Sewing Circle and First Generation Group. She was confirmed April 10, 1927, by Rev. Erich Bizer at Salem Evangelical Church of Eleroy. Esther taught Sunday school for many years.She was employed by Crum & Forster Insurance for 22 years retiring in 1975.She is survived by three daughters Janet Slaughter of Pasadena, Tx, Elaine (Thomas) Bauscher of Freeport, Ruth Ridings of Fort Myers, Fl; one sister Bertha (Emmert) Prasse of Lena; six grandchildren Joyce (John) Dannar of Houston, Tx, John Hagberg, of Houston, Jill (Bill) Barker of Pasadena , Tx, Debra (John) Brierton of Winnebago, Beth (Tim) Rasmus of Freeport, James (Juli) Bauscher of Rockford; and 21 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son John Marvin Abels on August 19, 1961 and one grandson David L. Ridings on May 24, 1987 and sister Lucile (Malcom) Coomber.Visitation will be Wednesday 4-7 pm at Walker Mortuary and Cremation Services in Freeport.Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Second Presbyterian Church in Freeport with the Reverend Robert Conner officiating.
