Esther Christensen, age 85, of Wesley, passed away on Monday August 31, 2020 at the Titonka Care Center. Esther Mary Anne Hasse, the daughter of Emil and Mary (Wojahn) Hasse, was born on April 12, 1935 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She graduated from Burt High School in 1953 and attended the Iowa Teachers College. On November 23, 1956 Esther was united in marriage with Wendell Christensen in Burt. She had worked as a school teacher in Story City and Belmond before raising her family. Esther was a member of St John’s Lutheran Church where she was active in LWML, taught Sunday School and started the preschool. She also served many years on the Titonka School Board. Esther enjoyed classical music and Broadway musicals. She also enjoyed cooking for and hosting her large family, especially for birthdays and holidays. Esther was famous for her chocolate chip cookies, German chocolate cake cookie sheet apple pie and banana bars. She was a devoted wife to her husband Wendell for 63 years. Esther was an avid gardener and had many flower beds. She enjoyed bowling, quilting, cross-stitching, puzzles and knitting. Left to cherish Esther’s memory is her husband, Wendell; children, Mary (Brad) Shipman of Cedar Rapids, Wendell (Teresa) Christensen Jr. of Wesley, Clark (Allison) Christensen of Algona, Charles Christensen of Wesley, Suzanne Bryan of Wesfield, IN and Andrew (Maggie) Christensen of Kanawha; 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and a brother, John (Jane) Hasse of Swanville, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws, Clarence and Gladys Christensen; brothers, Albert, Paul and Emil (Jr.) Hasse; and a sisters, Ruth, Alvina and Caroline.
