Essie Marie Kirby, 81, of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday March 19, 2016 in Terre Haute Regional Hospital surrounded by her family. Essie was born in Terre Haute on September 5, 1934 to William Shaffer and Pearl Halters Shaffer. Essie was retired from Terre Haute North High School where she worked in the cafeteria. Essie “Mom” was loved by all who came in contact with her, she always took the underdogs side in any disagreement no matter what. She always had a strong opinion but would listen to you. She loved garage sales in her earlier years and was always looking for a bargain to help the family out. She loved bowling and was very competitive, she was very good at the game and pushed others to be as well. After she became weaker and could not do it anymore, she always went up the bowling alley to cheer her friends to win. Later in live, she turned to the art of Bingo and sometimes played 12 cards at a time and even helped other during the game, he knack of retaining information, especially numbers was uncanny. She enjoyed eating out, especially at MCL Cafeteria. She herself was known as a great cook by her family and friends.
