West Hartland: Ernie Smith, a long-time resident of Pinehurst Lake died Wednesday, January 14, 2009. He was 93. Before moving to West Hartland, Ernie lived in Farmington and attended the Kingswood School in West Hartford. He then enrolled at Yale, graduating in 1937. He went on to earn a graduate degree from Harvard Business School. In 1939, he married Elizabeth G. (Betty) Knowlton of West Hartford. It was a partnership that would last 70 years. They had three children including two sons, Ernest III (who predeceased him in 1978) and Timothy, and a daughter, Nancy, as well as six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.After going to work for two years at The Hartford Special Machinery Company, a business that had been co-founded by his father, Mr. Smith entered the Army in 1941.
