Those left to honor Ernest’s memory include his wife, Louise McFarland of Newton; son, Jimmy D. McFarland of Newton; his daughter, Jocile (Doug) Versteegh of Newton; four grandchildren–Natalie (Dustin) Hedlund of Ames, Jessica Versteegh (and Jeremy Smith) of Newton, Josh (Tara) Versteegh of Newton, and Jake Versteegh of Newton; one great-grandchild, Samantha Smith of Newton; his brother, Max (Nancy) McFarland of Albia; two sisters–Margaret (Walt) Jay of Ottumwa and Darlene Rogers of Albia; a sister-in-law, Ruth McFarland of Albia; and many nieces and nephews.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Zelma (Hawk) McFarland; and his three brothers–Paul, Harry, and Charles McFarland.
Ernest graduated from Albia High School in 1948 and from Iowa State University in 1951 from the Dairy Plant Operations Program. He was a production worker in the sheet metal department at the Maytag Company for over 33 years, retiring in 1987.
